Introduction
Our commitment to preserving marine ecosystems led us to organize our inaugural environmental clean-up event at the Lough Shore area of Killybegs. This area, known for its stunning natural beauty, faces ongoing challenges with debris accumulation due to tidal shifts.
Why Lough Shore area of Killybegs?
The Lough Shore is particularly prone to debris build-up, making it a crucial area for our clean-up efforts. In collaboration with Barry from the Killybegs Tidy Towns committee, known for their exceptional town maintenance, we focused our efforts where they were most needed.
Preparation and Planning
To ensure a safe and successful event, our sustainability team, especially our Environmental Health and Safety officer, Kieran Keeney, meticulously planned every detail.
We provided all necessary safety equipment, including gloves, litter pickers, high-visibility vests, and other essential gear to protect our volunteers while they gathered rubbish.
By carefully considering tidal schedules and weather forecasts, we also selected the best possible date for our efforts.
The Clean-Up Day
Twelve enthusiastic volunteers came together, embracing the challenge with positivity. Despite encountering significant debris like cumbersome foam sheets and waterlogged styrofoam, our team’s determination and teamwork prevailed.
Even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits, instead, it strengthened our unity.
Collaboration with Local Organisations
Partnering with the Killybegs Tidy Towns committee, we strengthened community ties and shared resources, reinforcing our mutual commitment to environmental conservation. After the event, participants gathered at An Capall Mara on The Shore Road for well-deserved refreshments and camaraderie
Achievements and Impact:
Our efforts resulted in numerous filled rubbish bags and large debris items, enough to fill a trailer. The immediate visual impact was a testament to our hard work, leaving the Lough Shore noticeably cleaner.
Looking Forward:
