How to Safely Dispose of Time-Expired Flares (TEPs)

Time-expired flares (TEPs) pose a safety risk if not handled and disposed of correctly. To address this, the Department of Transport has established a scheme for the safe disposal of TEPs. As an authorized agent, SNG is here to help ensure the process is both safe and convenient for you.

Why Do Flares Expire?

Marine flares have expiration dates for a reason. Over time, the chemicals inside can degrade, leading to unreliable performance. Expired flares may fail to ignite when needed or, worse, ignite unpredictably. This instability makes proper disposal essential—not only for personal safety but also for the safety of others at sea.

Common Misconceptions About Flare Disposal

Many boat owners are unsure of what to do with old flares, and misconceptions can lead to dangerous practices. Here are a few common myths:

"I can use flares past their expiry."

While they may look fine on the outside, expired flares are highly unreliable due to the degradation of internal chemicals, which can lead to failure during emergencies or, worse, unpredictable ignition

"I’ll just throw them in the bin."

This is illegal in many places and poses significant risks to landfill workers, including potential injuries from accidental ignition, as well as long-term harm to the environment through chemical contamination

"I can store them indefinitely."

Over time, flares can become unstable as their chemical composition deteriorates, significantly increasing the risk of accidental ignition or dangerous mishandling.

Environmental Impact of Improper Disposal

Improperly discarding flares not only poses safety risks but can also harm the environment. Flares contain chemicals that, if released into soil or water, can be toxic to local ecosystems. By using designated disposal services, you’re helping protect the environment while ensuring safety.

How the Disposal Scheme Works

Under the new scheme, individuals or organizations can bring their expired flares to designated chandlers, including SNG’s locations in:

Once collected, TEPs are securely transported to the army for safe destruction. This service is available regardless of where the flares were originally purchased.

What Happens After You Drop Them Off?

After you hand over your TEPs to SNG, we ensure they’re properly stored and transported to trained professionals. The army handles final disposal, using controlled methods to safely neutralize the chemicals and materials within the flares. This collaborative effort ensures both safety and environmental protection

Guidelines for Handling and Transporting TEPs

When preparing your flares for disposal, follow these key safety tips:

Handle with Care:

  • Treat all TEPs as potentially hazardous. Avoid actions that could cause a fire or explosion.

Faulty or Misfired Flares:

  • Do not mix damaged or misfired pyrotechnics with regular TEPs. Contact the Gardaí if you suspect they are in a dangerous condition.

Packaging:

  • Place TEPs in a paper or plastic bag.
  • Store the bag in a strong cardboard box to prevent leaks or damage.

Transportation:

  • Secure the box in your vehicle to prevent movement.
  • Avoid carrying matches or other flammable items in the same vehicle.
  • Never smoke while handling or transporting TEPs.

Additional Safety Tips for Storing Flares Before Disposal

If you can’t immediately dispose of your TEPs, follow these guidelines for safe storage:

  • Store them in a cool, dry place away from heat sources or direct sunlight.
  • Keep them out of reach of children or unauthorized individuals.
  • Periodically check the condition of stored flares, looking for signs of damage or corrosion.
